Faith in you? Or Faith in Him?

God Gold of the Day

‘So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” ‘

John 8:31-32

This is a verse that I sent to you yesterday and without realizing God has worked this verse through my life to make it more real than ever! Jesus makes many statements to us to show us what it looks like to be His disciples and truly follow Him, this statement is simple but in the simpleness holds a life changing, chain breaking, doubt destroying power to His Word here.

Who was Jesus speaking to?

the Jews who had believed him.”

Jesus wasn’t speaking to unbelievers or any random person from any random crowd, He was speaking directly to those who believed in who He is and what He’s capable of as the Son of God. So often I want nothing more than to hear Jesus’ voice in my life and experience some sort of revelation that will set me free but I’ve noticed recently how quiet and disconnected I can feel when there is something hindering my belief in Jesus. That something is ME! I’ve mentioned this so many times before but self is what holds us back the most from our relationship with Jesus more than anything Satan could ever do or circumstance we face. Faith has nothing to do with us, faith is built and found by who it is we are believing, who we are trusting, and that person is JESUS! I don’t why I was surprised to feel this void of quietness and disconnection from Jesus because at the end of the day, my thoughts were running off of faith in myself, what I can’t do, where I’ve messed up in the past and why I will mess up again now. Faith in self hinders us from our belief in Jesus because there is such a GREAT difference in who Jesus is and what He can do compared to who we are and what we can do.

Over the past few hours I realized where I had went wrong and what opened me up to see my shortcomings was where the foundation of my thoughts and belief had been. I was abiding in self and trusting in what I saw, felt, and thought. That’s not good, not good at all and will only cause a rush of emotions that are the opposite of what Jesus brings into our lives. Emotions such as fear, doubt, insecurity, and weakness. I wondered what I could do to bring me out of this whole and get me away from myself and the answer is seen clearly in these verses.

“Abide in Jesus’ Word.”

Instead of being fueled off of me, the Lord moved me to spend some time abiding in His Word, coming to Him and just sitting under His presence. It was there that I saw Jesus, I saw more about who He is, how powerful He is and it was there that I found His truth that cut through all the lies that I had been believing and struggling with. During this time of abiding in Jesus, it was refreshing and renewing, I experienced Jesus, heard His truth and felt moved by His truth. First off, His truth broke down the lies that I had believed and been operating under and also His truth opened me up to believe in who Jesus is, what He’s capable of and humbled me to see that I don’t want to live out of what I got or entertain those weak, broken lies anymore. His truth opens us up to see that Jesus is the Life and the Way. His truth opened up my mind and my heart to take hold of it and also renewed and transformed my thinking and beliefs completely to seeing life in His way, to seeing situations through who He is and what He’s going to do through them. When our faith moves from abiding in us to abiding in Jesus and His Word, doubt turns to confidence, worry turns to hope, and fear turns to faith.

I don’t know how to explain this in all that power that it holds, but all I can tell you is I experienced what abiding and believing in myself and my words brought and it wasn’t pretty. What I want to encourage you in is that you don’t have to live in that feeling of being trapped or weak anymore, because Jesus has given us Himself to abide in, His Word to seek Him. and when we press into seeking Jesus and His Word, the famous line from the song “Amazing Grace” illustrates it perfectly.

“My chains are gone, I’ve been set free. My God, my Savior has ransomed me.”

24 year old dude with not a clue what he's doing but God's grace continues to amaze me! Current Seminary student, avid adventure seeker, and getting married to the most humble, weird, and beautiful girl on the planet! Wasted a lot of years living what I thought was the "good life", then Christ showed me what living really is. I pray that my story can somehow help in whatever way possible, to give encouragement and hope that Christ can do the same with you.
