Fertile Soil

God Gold of the Day

“The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.”

‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭12:15‬

“Plans go wrong for lack of advice; many advisers bring success.”

‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭15:22‬

Had the chance to sit down with a gentleman today and learned such a valuable lesson! I pray that this lesson can be of some help to you too and move your life forward, closer to God and closer to the purpose He has set in your life!

The purpose for meeting this fella was to get some guidance, ask some questions and hear some much needed advice. I’ll be the first to admit that seeking counsel from others is something I fail to do much too often, especially counsel from the wise. I fail to do it much like all of us do, we’re prideful human beings, we like to think that we know best, we don’t need any help, we’re tough enough, smart enough, we’ll figure it out right???

After spending a lot of time in this mentality, if figuring it out was crashing and burning, failing a lot, then yeah you could say I killed it! I can’t even take credit for seeking this man’s counsel because if it wasn’t for God’s hand divinely placing Him in my life I would never of known him. And on top of that, he made time out of his busy schedule to talk to me. That’s humbling enough in itself and even more humbling when you realize how many wise men and women we have right around us in our lives who are more than willing to pour into us. All we have to do, is simply just ask for help. It may not be your first choice but you have to ask yourself are you going to walk across the mine field of life blinded by your pride, going your way and getting beat down and hurt every step you take? Or are you willing to humble yourself, walk through the mine field of life following the footsteps of those who went before you? That’s how you survive! Even better than survival, God shows us clearly that’s how you succeed.

You have to be willing to be coachable, admit you don’t have all the answers and seek advice from men and women who will speak truth into your life, point you towards the ultimate source of wisdom, God and His Word! Being coachable makes you a player who is feared by the enemy. Your ways may seem right, you have all these awesome plans, but by yourself, you’ll never see the light of day. God has set people all around us to push us forward, give us advice to push us closer to God and the plan He has for us. The wisest thing we can ever do is admit that by ourselves, we aren’t very wise. Claim to be fertile soil, embrace being that soil and the seeds of wisdom that God has for you in His Word will fall right in, planted, worked on, and leading you to a big harvest. Embrace being fertile soil before those who have went before you, who have put the work in, made the mistakes and came out better for them so now they can tell you about what’s ahead, the storms that may try to ruin harvest God has for you. All the things that come at you in life that are considered obstacles, trying to veer you off the straight and narrow with God into a winding, confusing, and painful road. Being fertile soil now, prepares you for the harvest God is going to bring in your life and the others around you in such big ways.

I sat in my car after talking to this gentleman and I was blown away, every answer that I had been seeking, He spoke from his experiences and the wisdom He’s gained from God’s Word. Every answer I was in need of I had in the span of 1 hour or so was answered. Wow God! And it wasn’t like a big grand answer that solves all your problems or “this is what you should do step by step.” It was answers in the form of wisdom, what steps to take, what road to travel. This wisdom gave guidance and direction to my life that will change my life forever. I asked him a question about discernment, which is practically wisdom. Where do I even start?

He said first, always go to God’s Word, it’s where our lives start. With God. The direction and guidance that can be found in those pages are literally out of this world.

Next he mentioned prayer. That time seeking God, asking him every question you have, asking for His wisdom, a wisdom that is far greater than anything we could ever imagine to think up. Spend time talking to the wisest One of all, God. He will teach you, grow you and mold you in His ways, and James 1:5 says, ““If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.”

Lastly, he mentioned this Gold, seeking wise counsel, remain coachable. Not just going to a buddy and saying, “hey man what you think about this?” And getting a, “oh yeah man that sounds like a good idea.” But going to those people who will speak it to you real, who speak the truth no matter what the cost. They speak it and if you’re the fertile soil God wants you to be, that truth can grow you in huge ways.

Sometimes all it takes is a moment of surrender before God, admitting that you don’t have all of the answers, and stepping into an area you’re not used to, that will probably be a little uncomfortable at first, ask for help. The funny thing while listening to this man’s counsel, he mentioned many times that “I had heard this once, this person once told me.” The teachers were once the student just like you and me. It’s a big part of how they got to where they are and how we get to where God is taking us! Be fertile soil, seek wisdom and let those seeds of gold sink in pushing you toward the beautiful plant God has made you to be!

24 year old dude with not a clue what he's doing but God's grace continues to amaze me! Current Seminary student, avid adventure seeker, and getting married to the most humble, weird, and beautiful girl on the planet! Wasted a lot of years living what I thought was the "good life", then Christ showed me what living really is. I pray that my story can somehow help in whatever way possible, to give encouragement and hope that Christ can do the same with you.
