God Gold of the Day
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”-Proverbs 3:5-6
I’ve read these verses and heard them so many times and each time I get so wrapped up in verse 5 that I don’t even notice verse 6, or I just notice the good part about God making our paths straight. In the middle of “trusting the Lord” and “lean not on your own understanding” there is something else that stuck out to me. It’s easy to read trust in the Lord and don’t lean on your own understanding and want that really good sounding ending of having your paths made straight by the Lord. There’s a part in verse 6 that isn’t so easy, no wonder I’ve overlooked it.
“In all your ways submit to Him.”
This hit me like a ton of bricks. God says “in all your ways submit to him” not some of your ways, only the ways that you want to, but ALL your ways. Making decisions is tough enough as it is, especially when the decisions are BIG, life-altering decisions but to make the BIG decisions God shows us you must begin in the small decisions you make. ALL your ways, that’s each thing you do, each action you take, and each decision your make, lower yourself and your wants under God’s authority. It’s easy to try and make verse 5 work for you but to really experience trusting in God and putting self aside, it doesn’t just magically happen when you need wisdom and discernment because you’ve got a big decision coming up like finding a job, a house, buying a new car, what church you’ll go to. If you aren’t faithful in small things how do you expect to become faithful overnight in big things or for God to give you big things to happen in your life.
It’s crazy that we go the majority of our day doing what pleases us and what we want to do, then you face a big decision to make and now you want to submit yourself to God so He can make your paths straight. I have done that so many days and it’s practically like going to buy a lottery ticket. You buy it hoping to win big and everything in life will be better, it’s easy, you just have to buy the ticket and if you win you’re set for life. I’m not saying you have to work for God to help you but until you submit yourself to His control in your life on even the littlest tiny of things, why would you expect God to trust you with a million dollars, what good would you do with it?
It’s the little decisions we make each and every day when we get out of bed. Submit yourself under God in all ways, in the food you eat, the work you do, what you decide to do with your free time, ALL things. It’s crazy noticing the more I submit myself to the Lord in the smallest of things, the more I see how I should submit to Him in everything I do because He’s way more in control than me and He’s the only One capable of allowing me to do anything good. And I know for me, in those big decisions I can be so easily enticed, influenced and distracted to try and figure it out on my own. Submitting to God in the little moments, seeing the way He works and how awesome He is, that helps in the big moments to continue trusting Him and getting yourself out of the way. It’s an everyday grind, each moment, each decision you make today is who’ll you will be 1 week down the road, 5 years, 10 years. Focus on submitting in the small learning more of God and who He is, and trusting Him in the big ones will be much easier. Trusting Him that He has set you right where He wants you, or where He wants you to go, what to do. It can be extremely difficult trying to make decisions off your own understanding and God will let you make a mess of it because at the end of the day when you’ve run yourself in circles, confused and exhausted, the same truth is always going to be staring you in the face, “I can’t do anything without God.” So trust God, submit to Him in all your ways and you’ll see why you should never lean on your own understanding! He’s going to make your paths straight, this submission to a life with God in control leads to life in the fullest and biggest of ways! Submit to Him with ALL things, starting when your feet hit the floor today! The wisdom and discernment to make whatever big decisions you have will surround you as you trust that God has got you and that’s all that matters!
Oh my! The Holy Spirit is getting up in my business with this one.
