Thanksgiving Living

God Gold of the Day

“Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God.”/‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3:1-3‬

“And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful. Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.”/‭Colossians‬ ‭3:15-17‬

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving today! Between all the good food and hanging with the fam, it’s hard not to be thankful. The cool part about Thanksgiving is the perspective change that takes place as we get the chance to step away from all the busyness and mundane of our everyday lives. We get to sit back, enjoy time with family, eat like we’ve never eaten before and just enjoy the day that the Lord gave us for everything it’s worth. The hard part about days like today, is going back to work in that same ole busy, mundane lifestyle tomorrow. Why can’t we enjoy tomorrow like we enjoyed today? Why do we let the circumstances of our life weigh us down?

I’ve sat here typing out words, backspacing, typing, back spacing, I don’t have a clue how to live everyday in the same peaceful, joyful attitude as I lived with today but thank God for His Word shining light on our tomorrows. Paul says we have new life in Christ, from the moment we first believe and everyday after we are living in this new life with Christ, the life of eternity. We may not feel like it, our surroundings may not look like it but the truth in the good news of the gospel is that Christ has paid the price for our lives here on earth so we no longer have to live in the attitudes and traps that our earthly lives and circumstances bring. We wake up today and every day after in the truth that our old life is gone and we get to walk in the new life that Christ has given us with Him.

I like so many of us have to go back to work in the morning. I’m already having thoughts that are very thankful. Which brings the second part of the verse out in all of its light. It’s an instruction to keep our eyes set above, not on things that surround us here on earth. Why would we need to do that? If you are constantly thinking about the to-do list you have tomorrow and the job you have to go to that you don’t enjoy, your attitude is probably going to reflect it. When we set our minds on things above, on Christ and the new life He has given us, the truth that He’s walking with us and in us, your attitude will be a whole lot different. Living in the total worship mentioned in the second set of verses, the peace that only Christ can provide, living with thankfulness in everything we do. Those are natural actions after seeking and constantly keeping your minds filled with Christ and the eternity He has given you. How often do we get distracted and overlook these truths about our relationship with Christ, our new life for eternity there, here and now? How often do we make a point and priority to seek Christ and keep our minds above?

I type this because I make those mistakes daily and the way I live, the attitude I have shows it. I know if I don’t make that priority to seek Christ and stay constant in seeking Him then when life hits down here I’m going to act as if earth is my only home. No peace, no joy, I’m definitely not thankful. Who wants to live like that? We’ve been given so much, we’ve been given LIFE, a life of freedom and eternity, a heavenly connection with God Himself. He’s given us more than enough to be thankful for because He’s given us Himself. And to think that it says we are in Christ and then Christ is in God, wait a second, does that mean?!? Yep, it sure does. We are one with Christ and in this new life with Him we are one with God, the creator of everything we see around us. We have that powerful and awesome connection with God. I don’t know why my mind isn’t always looking above.

When I started typing this, I was thinking, “how can I live in this peace and worship mentioned in the second part of verses? What can I do?” Then verses 1-3 came in front of me and I realized there’s nothing I can do. By believing in Christ and what he’s already done by raising me out of my old life and my old way of thinking and living, I’m more thankful than I’ve ever been. I could care less about work tomorrow because I’m in Christ and He’s in me, what can happen that He can’t handle?

It struck me how much of a priority I need to check myself and keep my mind above in the truth of the Gospel because He changes everything. His truth and sacrifice reverses the offer the world can give me, instead of worry He gives peace, instead of fear He gives strength, instead of depression and selfishness He gives an abundance of joy and thankfulness that just makes you want to do nothing but worship Him in the fullness of what He deserves.

It’s crazy that we usually act out of our strongest belief, of what we put the most value on in our lives. If our strongest belief is in Christ and we value Him and the gift of eternity and freedom that He gave us to live in not one day but TODAY. He teaches us how to live in that belief. What do you believe about yourself, about what Christ has done for you and says about you? Do you value things of this earth more or the things above? When you believe the truth of the gospel your life reflects Christ, your values reflect eternity, your attitude changes, He brings you to be at peace, worshiping with joy, and in thankfulness of Him. Give thanks to Him today, raise your minds and eyes, prioritize Him, value your new life in Christ and this life of eternity more than anything else, it’ll be wild how He turns your world and others worlds all around you upside down. Let’s wake up worshiping tomorrow for He’s given us more than enough reasons to.

24 year old dude with not a clue what he's doing but God's grace continues to amaze me! Current Seminary student, avid adventure seeker, and getting married to the most humble, weird, and beautiful girl on the planet! Wasted a lot of years living what I thought was the "good life", then Christ showed me what living really is. I pray that my story can somehow help in whatever way possible, to give encouragement and hope that Christ can do the same with you.
